CYCLING

Cycling is very popular in Pistoia : if you are trained you can head to one of the many roads on the hills , if you are not so fit you can cycle on the Pistoian plane or have a tour of the windy streets in the historical center : the pedestrian zone has been enlarged recently and it is nice to wander around, except for Wednesday and Saturday mornings, when the market take place. Very good bikes for longer tours can be hired in Pistoia, at around 10-15 euro a day : it is better to book in advance. Another favourite place for bike lovers, is Lucca( 30 minutes far ): park the car , rent a bike , have a tour on the very well kept medieval walls which encircle the center. There are also many agencies who organize trips in Chianti leaving from Florence : you can go to Florence by bike and then join a guided tour.
If you prefer mountain biking, there is no better place than the Pistoian Mountain : there it is also possible to join guided tours ot to go on your own . The nearby mountains are pretty high but easy to tour because they have quite a sweet profile, not as rough and rocky as- giving example- the Apuan Alps, where mountain biking is more extreme. If you are looking for an easier trip, you can go on the hills nearby Pistoia : to get lost is almost impossible : the bell tower will be your North Star ! On the hills you can find prestigious villas alternated by little forests and olive groves , and very few tourists : rejoice looking at the panorama extending up to the Duomo of Florence !

SOCCER

Four Tuscan teams are playing in the major league in the season 2005/2006 : Fiorentina ( Florence ), Siena , Livorno and Empoli. Their stadiums are less than a hour drive from Pistoia. The season goes from the beginning of September until the end of May.
